This nation of more than 30 million people has one of
the world's fastest growing populations, with an average age of about
15 years.
Kenya lies across the equator in east-central Africa on
the coast of the Indian Ocean. It is almost the size of Texas. The land
is mostly arid. Kenya has a wide varieties of climates: Hot and humid
along the Coastal strip; Hot, dry deserts in the North, and cool highlands
in the West and Central regions.
Kenya is world-famous for it's wildlife, stunning scenery,
and friendly people.
Until 1963 Kenya was a British colony and part of British
East Africa. Since gaining independence in 1963, Kenya has been governed
by a parliamentary democracy. Kenya has a strong, free enterprise economy,
which has made it the economic hub of East-central Africa. Since independence,
the government has placed a high priority on education, and basic schooling
is now available to virtually all children, except for the most remote
areas, resulting in a higher than average literacy rate for Africa.
Languages: Swahili is the National Language, English is
the Official language, and most people know at least one other tribal
language.
Religions: About 70% are Nominal Christians; 7% still
follow traditional religions. About 20% of the population embraces Islam,
which is growing rapidly across East Africa. The final 3% is divided
among other oriental religions (Hindu, Sikh, etc.)
